The 41-year-old was convicted Friday, Feb. 2 for three counts of attempted murder of a federal law enforcement officer and related offenses, federal prosecutors wrote in a release.

Authorities said Vega-Rodriguez was wanted for a state parole violation when the trio of FBI agents spotted him on West Greenwich Street on March 1, 2020.

When the agents tried to stop him, authorities said Vega-Rodriguez drew a handgun from his waistband and shot at them as he fled. No one was struck by the gunfire, prosecutors said.

Vega-Rodriguez was later tracked to Leola, Lancaster County, and arrested early on March 3, 2020, according to officials.

“Rafael Vega-Rodriguez was so determined not to be arrested and go back to prison that he immediately opened fire on approaching FBI agents,” said U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero.

“It’s incredibly fortunate that none of the agents, or anyone else for that matter, was hit. When Vega-Rodriguez pulled the trigger that night, he sealed his own fate, and now faces spending the rest of his life behind bars.”
